VIRGINIA RESIDENTS OFFERED DISCOUNT ADMISSION
TO JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT, YORKTOWN VICTORY CENTER
ON SELECTED WEEKENDS IN 2007 AND 2008

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.—Virginia residents are invited to join in commemorating “America’s 400th Anniversary” with a 50 percent discount off general admission to Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center on Saturdays and Sundays in February, August and October 2007 and January and February 2008. The two state-operated living-history museums tell the story of the nation’s beginnings, from the arrival of America’s first permanent English colonists in 1607 to the American Revolution and the formation of a new nation in the 18th century.

Throughout 2007, special programs and events at Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center will mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown. Tours, demonstrations and presentations at both museums feature a different theme each month, including black history in February, free enterprise/agriculture and industry in August, and Virginia history and archaeology in October.

Jamestown Settlement features new permanent exhibition galleries and a new introductory film that chronicle the nation’s 17th-century beginnings in Virginia in the context of its Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures. Outdoors, visitors can board a replica of one of the three ships that sailed from England to Virginia in 1607 and explore life-size re-creations of the colonists’ fort and a Powhatan Indian village. A recently developed riverfront discovery area compares the technology and economic activities of Powhatan, European and African cultures.

At the Yorktown Victory Center, a new long-term exhibition, “The Legacy of Yorktown: Virginia Beckons,” tells the story of people who shaped Virginia society and the creation of a new national government with a Constitution and Bill of Rights. Other gallery exhibits and an outdoor living-history Continental Army encampment and 1780s farm trace events that led to
Revolution and explore its impact on people of the era.

Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from June 15 through August 15. A regularly priced combination ticket for both museums is $17.75 for adults, $8.50 for children ages 6-12. Jamestown Settlement admission is $13.50 for adults, $6.25 for ages 6-12. Yorktown Victory Center admission is $8.75 for adults, $4.50 for ages 6-12. Children under 6 are free.

To obtain the 50 percent discount on general admission on weekends in February, August and October 2007 and January and February 2008, Virginia residents must show proof of residency, such as a driver’s license. Children accompanying adult Virginia residents will receive the 50 percent discount. The discount does not apply to group admissions or for guests who reside outside Virginia or at other times during the year.

Jamestown Settlement is located on State Route 31 and the Colonial Parkway, next to Historic Jamestowne, in James City County. The Yorktown Victory Center is located on Route 1020 in Yorktown. For more information, call (888) 593-4682 toll-free or (757) 253-4838.
