WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Bermudian and American filmmaker Lucinda Spurling will discuss the making of her new documentary “The Lion and the Mouse … the Story of America and Bermuda,” at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 25, at Jamestown Settlement’s Robins Foundation Theater. The presentation launches a series of four public lectures related to the museum’s current “Jamestown and Bermuda: Virginia Company Colonies” special exhibition.
Ms. Spurling will show part of “The Lion and the Mouse” during her presentation. The film charts the landmark moments, relationships, conflicts and characters that played a part in four centuries of settlement in America and Bermuda from the perspective of Bermuda’s people and their direct role in the birth of America and its development as a nation.
A graduate of Tulane University in New Orleans, La., with a bachelor’s degree in communications, and Bristol University in the United Kingdom, with a master’s degree in film and television, Ms. Spurling worked as a journalist and film editor before founding Afflare Films in 2002. Her first feature-length documentary, “Rare Bird,” about the rediscovery of the Bermuda Cahow, received the Special Jury Remi award at WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival and has been acquired by PBS International for U.S. broadcast.
“Jamestown and Bermuda: Virginia Company Colonies” will be open to lecture attendees from 6 to 6:45 p.m. on April 25 and, following the presentation, until 8:30 p.m. The exhibition, which continues through October 15, examines the shared history and links between England’s first two permanent colonies in the New World.
Future lectures are scheduled at 7 p.m. on June 13 with University of Tennessee Professor of History Lorri Glover, co-author of “The Shipwreck That Saved Jamestown: The Sea Venture Castaways and the Fate of America”; July 11 with University of Rochester Associate Professor of History Michael Jarvis, speaking on “Sister Colonies: Virginia, Bermuda, and the Beginnings of English America”; and August 8 with Masterworks Foundation and Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art Founder and Creative Director Tom Butterfield, presenting “Somewhere Beyond the Sea: Art, Artists, and Bermuda.”
