| | THIRD ‘JAMESTOWN AND BERMUDA’ LECTURE IS JULY 11 AT JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT | |
| WILLIAMSBURG, Va., June 22, 2009 – University of Rochester Associate Professor of History Michael Jarvis will speak on “Sister Colonies: Virginia, Bermuda, and the Beginnings of English America,” at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 11, at Jamestown Settlement’s Robins Foundation Theater. The presentation is the third in a series of four public lectures related to the museum’s current “Jamestown and Bermuda: Virginia Company Colonies” special exhibition examining the shared history and links between England’s first two permanent colonies in the New World.
Dr. Jarvis will discuss how cross-cultural influences shaped a distinctly new culture and, through characterizations of Bermuda as a “finite” space and Virginia as an “infinite” space, consider how these qualities shaped settlement pace and patterns into the 1620s.
Author of “Bermuda’s Architectural Heritage: St. George’s,” which surveys the architecture of Bermuda’s first capital, and the forthcoming “In the Eye of All Trade: Bermuda, Bermudians, and the Maritime Atlantic World, 1680-1783,” scheduled for publication in 2010 by the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture, Dr. Jarvis has written about Bermuda and Virginia history in several publications. He received a Ph.D. from the College of William and Mary and engaged in archaeological fieldwork over 10 years at colonial and Revolutionary sites in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Virginia and Bermuda.
“Jamestown and Bermuda: Virginia Company Colonies” will be open to lecture attendees from 6 to 6:45 p.m. on July 11 and, following the presentation, until 8:30 p.m. Dr. Jarvis also will be available to sign copies of “Bermuda’s Architectural Heritage: St. George’s.”
The “Jamestown and Bermuda” exhibition continues through October 15. The final lecture in the series is scheduled for August 8, with Masterworks Foundation and Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art Founder and Creative Director Tom Butterfield presenting “Somewhere Beyond the Sea: Art, Artists, and Bermuda.” Lucinda Spurling spoke on April 25 about her new documentary film, “The Lion and the Mouse … the Story of America and Bermuda,” and Lorri Glover, co-author of “The Shipwreck That Saved Jamestown: The Sea Venture Castaways and the Fate of America,” spoke on June 13.
