INTERNET TRANSMISSION BRINGS EAGLE RIVER, ALASKA, STUDENTS TO SPRINGFIELD, VA., FOR ‘CULTURES AT JAMESTOWN’ PROGRAM

WILLIAMSBURG, Va., Nov. 10, 2009 – Fourth-grade students at Hunt Valley Elementary School in Springfield, Va., and Homestead Elementary School in Eagle River, Alaska, will participate together in a “Cultures at Jamestown” educational program presented by the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation at Hunt Valley on Friday, November 13.

The program will be transmitted live from Virginia to Alaska through an Internet connection, allowing the instructor and students at both schools to interact.

During the program, scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, students will learn about the complex cultural interactions that took place in the early 17th century and how this interaction shaped American history and life in the United States today.  The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation instructor will engage the fourth-graders in demonstrations, role-playing, and examination of reproduction artifacts from the Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures.

The Internet transmission of “Cultures at Jamestown” is part of a school-wide partnership between Hunt Valley and Homestead.

The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation is a Virginia state agency that operates Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center, living-history museums where the story of the nation’s beginnings – from the arrival of America’s first permanent English colonists in 1607 to the American Revolution and the adoption of the Constitution and Bill of Rights almost two centuries later – unfolds in gallery exhibits and outdoor re-created settings.

Curriculum-based educational programs are provided for student groups at the museums and in classrooms throughout Virginia.
