HOMESCHOOL PROGRAM 
September 8-19, 2008

homeschool_group_on_pier.jpgAt Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center, your homeschool students will love discovering the sights and sounds of the 17th and 18th centuries while learning about their nation’s history. And you will love the variety of curriculum-based education programs offered for a range of grade levels – all taught by trained museum educators.

Homeschool programs will be offered September 8-19 at Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center. A special homeschool ticket is available, and the fee is $10.25 per family member (youth or adult) for general admission to both museums. Homeschool ticket holders can visit both museums as many times as they like during the program date range. The fee also includes optional hands-on programs and guided tours of Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center. All programs address Virginia and United States standards of learning for history and social studies.

Students can enroll in one of three optional programs at each museum, according to grade level, and families can register for an optional interactive, two-hour guided tour or hands-on program at each museum. At Jamestown Settlement, homeschool parent-teachers can register to participate in a workshop related to the special exhibition, "A New World: England's First View of America."

Homeschool admission tickets are available for online purchase at http://jyfemail.jyf.virginia.gov/onestore/index.aspx. Tickets can also be acquired by calling Group Reservations at (757) 253-4939 or at the visitor services desk at either museum. Once you have purchased tickets, please pre-register for hands-on programs and guided tours by calling Group Reservations at (757) 253-4939. The pre-registration deadline for hands-on programs and guided tours is 5 p.m. three business days prior to the program/tour.

If requested program/tour dates and times are available, you will receive an email confirmation letter. If requested program/tour dates and times are not available, you will receive a call from Reservations.

At Jamestown Settlement, homeschool parent teachers can participate in a workshop related to the special exhibition, “A New World:  England’s First View of America.”

Jamestown Settlement

Family Guided Tour
Visit re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, colonial fort and 1607 ships, and a riverfront discovery area on this two-hour hands-on, tour guided by a trained museum educator.

"A New World" Exhibit Family Tour
Thirty-minute interactive tour of the special exhibition, “A New World:  England’s First View of America.”

Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 2

Living With the Indians
Students handle and analyze clothing, bone tools and pottery of the Powhatan Indian culture.
Program dates: September 8, 11, 19
Program times: 10:30 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Grades 3-6 -
Cultures at Jamestown
Students compare and contrast the Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures that came into contact during the 17th century.

Grades 7-12 - Voyage to Virginia
Students learn about the 1607 voyage to Virginia by exploring period navigational tools.

Family Hands-on Programs

Living with the Indians
Corn grinding, hide scraping and cordage making are some of the activities families may try in the re-created Powhatan Indian village as they explore the culture of the Powhatans.

Life at Jamestown
Families are introduced to daily life, economic ventures, and early struggles in the Jamstown colony through hands-on demonstrations such as open-hearth cooking and musket firing in James Fort.

Hands-on Homeschool Parent Teacher Workshop

“Re-encountering the New World”
Hands-on Homeschool Parent Teacher Workshop
This hands-on teacher workshop for homeschool parent teachers is related to the special exhibition, “A New World:  England’s First View of America,” at Jamestown Settlement July 15-October 15. This special exhibition from the British Museum features the 16th-century watercolors of John White, the earliest visual record by an Englishman of the flora, fauna and people of the New World. The 3½-hour hands-on workshop will include:
• The story of John White and the Roanoke expedition (the Lost Colony)
• An interactive tour of the special exhibition with an emphasis on developing skills in artistic and historical analysis
• A walking tour of the re-created Powhatan Indian village focusing on primary sources, including John White’s watercolors, and archaeology, and how they are used the interpret the Powhatan culture
• A workshop on using primary sources, including John White’s watercolors, to make inferences about people and events in history

Time:    1:00 – 4:30 p.m.

The workshop is included with the Fall 2008 homeschool ticket, but space is limited. The workshop is for homeschool parent teachers without their children. Adult-supervised homeschool students are encouraged to visit the museum during the workshop. To register for the “Re-encountering the New World” workshop, call Group Reservations at (757) 253-4939.

Yorktown Victory Center

Family Guided Tour
Visit the re-created Continental Army encampment,1780s farm, and museum galleries on this two-hour, hands-on tour guided by a trained museum educator.

Hands-on Programs for Students

Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 2 -
Colonial Life
Students examine tools and materials used on a small Virginia farm to explore life of a typical Tidewater farming family.
Program dates: September 9, 12, 18 Program times: 10:30 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Grades 3-6 - Revolutionary Virginia
Students analyze primary sources and reproduction artifacts to learn about lives of ordinary 18th-century Virginians.
Program dates: September 9, 12, 18 Program times:  10:30 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Grades 7-12 -
Life of a Private
Students explore a Continental soldier’s haversack, clothing and weapons to relate to the experiences of people during the American Revolution.

Family Hands-on Programs

Life of a Private
Families investigate key issues that led to the American Revolution and experience what life was like for an average soldier.

Colonial Medicine
Families experience 18th-century healthcare in the Continental Army encampment and 1780s Virginia Tidwater farm.
Program date:  September 16
Program time:  2:00 pm


Plan time to see the introductory film, visit the museum galleries, have lunch and visit the gift shops at Jamestown Settlement before or after your program and tour. At the Yorktown Victory Center, visit the museum galleries, view the film and visit the gift shop.
