Living With the Indians
Students handle and analyze clothing, bone tools and pottery of the Powhatan Indian culture.

Grades 3-6 - Cultures at Jamestown
Students compare and contrast the Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures that came into contact during the 17th century.

Students learn about the 1607 voyage to Virginia by exploring period navigational tools.

Corn grinding, hide scraping and cordage making are some of the activities families may try in the re-created Powhatan Indian village as they explore the culture of the Powhatans.

Life at Jamestown
Families are introduced to daily life, economic ventures, and early struggles in the Jamstown colony through hands-on demonstrations such as open-hearth cooking and musket firing in James Fort.

“Re-encountering the New World”
Hands-on Homeschool Parent Teacher Workshop
This hands-on teacher workshop for homeschool parent teachers is related to the special exhibition, “A New World: England’s First View of America,” at Jamestown Settlement July 15-October 15. This special exhibition from the British Museum features the 16th-century watercolors of John White, the earliest visual record by an Englishman of the flora, fauna and people of the New World. The 3½-hour hands-on workshop will include:
• The story of John White and the Roanoke expedition (the Lost Colony)
• An interactive tour of the special exhibition with an emphasis on developing skills in artistic and historical analysis
• A walking tour of the re-created Powhatan Indian village focusing on primary sources, including John White’s watercolors, and archaeology, and how they are used the interpret the Powhatan culture
• A workshop on using primary sources, including John White’s watercolors, to make inferences about people and events in history

The workshop is included with the Fall 2008 homeschool ticket, but space is limited. The workshop is for homeschool parent teachers without their children.
